Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why can't I just get my CPR card from my local firehouse or rescue squad course? How about getting my training and card over the Internet? The New York State Education Department only recognizes training from approved providers whose training and certifications meet specific critical guidelines. HeartMasters and it's instructors are fully approved providers of CPR/AED for Healthcare Professionals (CPR-PRO). There are no internet courses that meet these guidelines.

2. Why do I need training in CPR for Healthcare Professionals?
CPR-PRO is the gold standard in CPR/AED training for Dentists. No other CPR/AED course covers the necessary core skills needed to meet NYS Education Guidelines. CPR-PRO is the standard of care you must meet as a healthcare provider. CPR-PRO is the only course HeartMasters will teach dentists and their staff.

3. Do I really need to have an AED?  I've checked with my malpractice carrier and the dental association and can't seem to get a definitve answer on this.
Article 30 of the New York Public Health Law addresses this question in it's statement regarding the rendering of emergency care.  It states in Section 3000-a " Nothing in this section shall be deemed or construed to relieve a licensed physician, dentist, nurse, physical therapist or registered physician's assistant from liability for damages for injuries or death caused by an act or omission on the part of such person while rendering professional services in the normal and ordinary course of his or her practice."  This means you must have a fully functional AED on site and you must be trained to use it correctly.  You must also assure that it remains functional through documented regular maintenance and service according to the manufacturers recommendations.

4. Why does my staff have to be trained if New York State doesn't require it? CPR-PRO teaches one and two rescuer skills. Even if you are the only rescuer, your staff still needs to be trained to respond to emergencies when they occur. What if a rescue is needed when you're not in the office but patients and staff are? What if you are the victim? HeartMasters will develop an emergency response plan specifically for your office and teach you and your staff how to carry it out should the need arise.

5. Can I become certified at one of the large dental meetings that offer CPR courses? Approved course providers and instructors must comply with specified guidelines regarding optimal student/trainer and student/equipment ratios. They also must teach the didactic and practical core skills integral to CPR/AED for Healthcare Professionals. Numerous studies have shown that the most effective CPR/AED training occurs when the practical skills are taught in small groups, onsite and with the same equipment you may need to use in an actual emergency. It is unlikely that the quality of training at a large meeting or in a large group setting will meet these requirements.

6. Won't "good samaritan" laws protect me if I fail to meet these standards?
"Good Samaritan" laws will not protect you if you fail to meet the standard of care for CPR/AED in your office.

7. Can I use any AED? I've seen used ones on E-Bay.
Your ability to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest will depend directly on the functionality of your AED and your familiarity with it. Additionally, AEDs manufactured before 2006 may not meet current American Heart Association guidelines. It is also vitally important that you receive your AED training on the same type of AED that you may need to use in an emergency. As manufacturer's distributors, HeartMasters' sales department can supply you with the most current and economical AEDs available at a significant discount. HeartMasters can even help with reprogramming your AED so that it continues to conform to the most current guidelines should the guidelines change in the future. Our sales department can also supply bag-valve masks, pocket masks and training aids, also at significant discount.

8. My dental supplier sells AEDs and is urging me to buy one from him, why shouldn't I?  Medical authorization, in the form of a physicians prescription, is required in New York State in order to purchase an AED or replacement electrode pads.  Furthermore, medical tracing and medical oversight are required protocols that must be followed for AED programs implemented in New York State. Dental equipment suppliers do not offer these essential services. HeartMasters is the only CPR/ AED vendor offering these services exclusively to dentists in New York State.  HeartMasters also offers close customer support directly through Philips in the event that your AED requires servicing.  Additionally, Philips Medical Systems is the only manufacturer of AEDs to provide indemnification to the user in the event of a malfunction that results in harm or death to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. This indemnification can only be obtained when your AED is purchased through an authorized Philips distributor.

9. How long is my certification good for? Generally for one or two years depending on the certifying organization. HeartMasters' instructors are certified by the American Safety and Health Institute and can certify you and your staff for a two year period.

10. How much does your program cost?
The cost for in office, onsite training will depend on several factors including how may people are registering and where you are located. HeartMasters' fees are all inclusive and include all books and other training materials.  Fee quotations for onsite training are therefore determined on an individual basis and are very reasonable compared to most professional continuing education. HeartMasters also offers economical group training throughout New York State and is committed to providing this training at regular intervals to help dentists with their CPR/AED training requirements. HeartMasters reputation is founded on the quality of our teaching and the exceptional value we provide. Please let us know whether you are interested in onsite or group training when you contact our office to register..
